AKIYA AIR 2025 Update: Gemma is Now in Yunotsu
The AKIYA Artist in Residence (AIR) 2025 has officially begun in Yunotsu, Shimane Prefecture.
The artist and printmaker, Gemma Wilson, has arrived for the residency, exploring how ancient stories and craftsmanship continue to shape community life today.
Let’s have a glimpse into Gemma’s first impressions of Yunotsu:
“I was captivated by Iwami Kagura (石見神樂) — a traditional Shinto dance-theatre that brings local myths to life through masks, music, and movement. The expressive masks, handmade costumes, and the participation of all generations revealed how deeply these stories live within the people here.”

From observing pottery and blacksmith workshops to studying the myths that inspire local traditions, Gemma is delving into Yunotsu’s living mythology, a place where nature, heritage, and community meet:
“I also had the opportunity to observe local craftsmanship in pottery and blacksmithing, witnessing techniques carefully preserved across generations. While maintaining these traditions is not without challenges, local initiatives strive to sustain the region’s cultural heritage and keep it alive for future generations.
These experiences have provided rich inspiration for my woodcut explorations of ancient myths and deepened my appreciation for the ways communities connect with art and storytelling.”
