AKIYA AIR IWAMI: Juliette Huygen’s First Days in Gotsu

Since arriving in Gotsu, Juliette Huygen has spent their first days exploring local craft traditions and discovering rural life, together with Gotsu Future Education Design Institute (GFEDI), which is hosting Juliette.

A First Glimpse of Life in Gotsu

From harvesting rice with the local community to preparing materials for a traditional earthen wall (tsuchikabe), these experiences have connected Juliette with the region through shared activities and hands-on learning.

“From dancing in clay to refined paper art. These days have been about finding my temporary roots in the area, connecting to the daily life of rurality and touching upon the many different craft traditions.” — Juliette Huygen, AKIYA AIR IWAMI Resident

Following the Hand of the Maker

Juliette’s research has taken them to several production sites, including Sekishu Kawara roof-tile producers, Sekishu Washi papermakers, and a stone quarry. From clay to handmade paper, each visit offers insight into the materials, techniques, and knowledge passed down through generations.

These encounters reveal the relationships between craft, community, and the people who sustain these traditions. Juliette has also been struck by the creativity with which local people respond to its challenges.

“There is clearly so much heart and community in this place. The region faces challenges, but i am constantly struck by the solutions people are finding and the abundance of creativity and love they pour into them.” — Juliette Huygen, AKIYA AIR IWAMI Resident

These encounters are laying the groundwork for Juliette’s investigation into the “hand of the maker,” exploring how materials, gestures, and shared knowledge shape the things people make.
