Encountering Yunotsu’s Layers of History & Everyday Life

As the autumn leaves deepen in color this November, Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy have settled into Yunotsu and begun their own journey. Their first week offered an introduction not only to Yunotsu’s heritage sites, but also to its community networks, creative practitioners, and rhythms of daily life.

“Our first week in Yunotsu has been full of discovery. We explored the coastal town, visited Yunotsu Port (温泉津港), Iwami Ginzan (石見銀山), and the historic streets of Ōmori (大森銀山重要伝統的建造物群).”

As their residency continues, Anne and Luke are beginning to shape the early stages of their artistic ideas while deepening their connection with the people and traditions of Yunotsu.

“We learned about Shifu (紙布) paper weaving at the Kawamotokita Community Center (川本北公民館), met designers transforming recycled furniture in Gotsu(江津市), visited the MUJUN workshops, and spent time at the pottery village and local library. Each day revealed new layers of the region’s character.”
